What causes acid reflux cough?

It may seem odd that acid reflux, a condition caused by too much stomach acid, can cause a chronic cough.  However, there is a simple explanation for the cough.  When there is an abundance of acid in your stomach, the acid will often flow back up into your esophagus.  Sometimes, the acid will cause your esphagus to reflux and cause a spasm in your airway.  The spasm will cause shortness of breath and coughing.  It is also common for excess stomach acid to irritate the nerves in your esophagus and cause you to cough.
